Induction for managers

This page outlines the organisational management induction programme and covers all key requirements for inducting new managers to MVDC.  Individual service areas will also have tailored induction needs for managers and these will run in conjunction with the induction programme outlined below.

The MVDC Management Induction Programme consists of the following:

  • Welcome information, including induction schedule and buddying for new managers
  • ‘Meet’n’Greet’ with a member of SLT hosted meeting for new starters
  • Essential e-learning modules (required for all new starters)
  • Management e-learning modules (required for all new managers – either new to MVDC or new to management responsibilities)
  • Health and Safety Awareness
  • Information about local induction arrangements

All employees must take part in the relevant MVDC Induction Programme as well as any tailored service area induction requirements. The below information includes the MVDC Induction Programme content with additional management specific content.

The MVDC Management Induction Checklist will form the basis for all management induction programmes but is sufficiently flexible to be tailored to meet specific service needs as well.

All employees will be encouraged to ask questions before the induction is concluded and to identify any specific requirements they may have.  Employees should have a post induction interview with their line manager where they will have the opportunity to identify any further needs, as part of their 6 month probation meeting and Personal Development Review discussions going forward.

Service area inductions will be tailored to meet the needs of the service and the employee, for managers this may include work and project briefings; management, team and partnership meetings; Busness Management Team (BMT) introductions.

The process of induction must be integrated as far as possible with the management of probationary procedures1-2-1s, Performance Development Reviews (PDRs) and learning and development activities.

MVDC Management Induction Programme

To achieve a successful induction, a systematic plan should be followed.  This is to enable records to be kept and ensure that vital information is not missed. This can be achieved through completion of the following:

These checklists cover actions to be taken from one week prior to induction through the first 6 months of a new manager’s probation period.

All checklists must be returned to hr.admin@molevalley.gov.uk once completed. If your service uses the Adelante Cash Payment system you must ensure that your new starter completes the confidentiality form and returns it to finance.

As the manager responsible for creating an induction schedule you will need to amend the MVDC Induction Programme Checklist Template to meet the needs of the service level induction programme.  Space has been left at the bottom of each section of the Induction template to add service level induction elements.

Managers must use the Induction Checklist to support the induction of all new employees as part of their induction programme, from their first day and throughout the probation period. Specific elements outlined on the checklist should be completed within the given timeframe.   The manager must date each element as it is completed, and sign the end of the form to confirm completion. A copy should then be provided to HR for the employee’s file.

Buddy for New Managers

As part of the induction programme it is recommended that all managers are provided with a ‘buddy’ to support them with general introductions, systems and MVDC values and conduct. More information about selecting a suitable ‘buddy’ for your new manager can be found here.

Managers are responsible for making suitable arrangements for a member of staff to act as a buddy during their employees first few months at MVDC. Please contact suitable members of staff directly to ask for their participation as your employees buddy, ensuring you have agreement from their manager in advance where they are not a member of your team.

New Starter Learning Activities

Included in the above MVDC Management Induction Checklist are the mandatory e-learning activities all new managers must complete. Mandatory learning will be automatically recorded as a Learning Event on iTrent and can be viewed by the manager and employee via the relevant iTrent portal. Click here for a list of mandatory New Starter Learning Activities.

Along with mandatory learning required of all new employees managers will be provided with access to a number of additional management and leadership modules. It is also strongly advised that your new manager undertakes the following management and leadership e-learning modules during their first 3-6 months in post:

  • Management Development modules including (
  • Effective Recruitment and Selection (it is recommended that the ‘Introduction to Unconscious Bias’ e-learning is completed along side to complement this course)
  • Finance for non Financial Managers
  • Coaching Conversations for Managers

A selection of additional management courses are available through MVDCs e-Learning partners. These modules are free to access and can be completed as desired, accessible at any time on a range of smart devises to suit the individual. Access to e-Learning platforms can be found here and use of these should be encouraged to enhance employment, management and leadership development.

Further management and leadership development is available through various mentoring, sponsored and classroom based courses. Suitability and priority for attendance at these should be discussed and agreed with all managers as part of ongoing Performance Development Reviews (PDRs).

*Completion of all essential new starter activities must be considered at employee’s three month probation meeting. Probation must not be signed off until all New Starter Learning Activities have been completed.
