Managing Performance Tips

As a Manager at Mole Valley you are required to hold regular one2ones with all your reporting staff. These should be at least monthly, but more frequently for new starters, or where there are specific performance, absence, sickness or capability concerns or during other periods where more support is needed.

Management may involve holding difficult conversations.  A variety of ‘tip sheets’ have been provided as part of previous training session, and these are attached in the links below for reference.  If you have to deliver bad news, or give an employee negative feedback, you may find these useful.

There are also tips on managing ‘smart working’ for situations when either you or your employee are working more remotely or flexibly.  Presenteeism in these cases (or in fact most cases) is not a useful measurement.

If you have any performance or capability related concerns for which you seek guidance from HR, one of the first questions you will be asked is for evidence of the most recent Performance and Development Review and any performance management related discussions, including confirmation that you have been holding regular one2ones.

There are several documents below which give further guidance on managing performance (linking with our Performance and Development Review system), holding one2ones, structuring a coaching section and ‘push and pull’ feedback.
