Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Celebrating diversity and promoting inclusion for all

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion are about acknowledging that everyone has a right to fair and equal treatment, irrespective of age, disability, sex (gender), sexual orientation or any other characteristic.

What is Equality, Diversity and Inclusion?

Equality means ensuring that everyone has equity of opportunity, regardless of their abilities, background or lifestyle.

Diversity recognises that people are different in a variety of visible and non-visible ways, and that those differences are to be recognised, respected, valued, promoted and celebrated.

Inclusion is the practice of including people in a way that is fair for all, it values people’s differences and empowers and enables each person to be themselves and to achieve their full potential.

Under the Public Sector Equality Duty, (part of the Equality Act 2010), all public sector organisations, including MVDC, must identify and consider the needs of all individuals:

  • In the way we work
  • When developing policy
  • When delivering services
  • In our recruitment, employment and staffing arrangements

What MVDC do to ensure that our services are accessible to all

MVDC’s equality and diversity practices make sure that the services we provide are fair and accessible to everyone. We do this by:

  1. Having an Equality Policy Statement and Objectives which set out our equality principles and equality objectives for 2022-26
  2. Having an Equality Action Plan which supports the Equality Policy Statement and Objectives and sets out our actions for the coming year
  3. Completing Equality Impact Assessments when we are developing a new service, undertaking a service review, or making changes to existing policy or services
  4. Ensuring all new starters complete Equality and Diversity training
  5. Making Equality and Diversity training available to all staff
  6. Providing guidance on communications and documentation accessibility
