Insurance Cover for Working at Home

Question

As we are continuing to work from home some of the time, do you know if this effects Household Insurance especially with work laptops and or screens now at home.

Answer

Thank you for this really interesting question as it is something we hadn’t given any thought to.

The CIPD offers the following advice – “Usually it is the employee’s responsibility to check that no issues arise with their mortgage provider, landlord, local authority, Revenue or their home insurer when homeworking. In this unprecedented situation it is hoped that any issues, for example increases in house insurance premiums, would be minimal but it is prudent for employees to check. “

I have just checked with my own home insurer and they have a statement on their website (under Q’s and A’s) covering this very point.

I also checked out the position with regards to borrowing equipment from work (chairs, laptops etc) and can confirm that any item borrowed during this current time would be covered under MVDC’s insurance, however there continues to be an onus on us all to use the equipment borrowed safely and responsibly.
