TOIL (Time Off In Lieu)

Time off in Lieu is referred to as TOIL. This is different to flexi time. It is generally used if you are required to attend evening meetings. It can also be used by departments who do not operate flexi time (e.g. the CSU), but who may, for example, require their team to convene for meetings outside working hours.

The accumulation of TOIL is not recorded on the flexi system. Requests to take TOIL are however made on the HR system and within your flexi records.

In some circumstances, such as where job pressures prevent you from taking the time back, TOIL can attract a small payment. This is not a payment relative to the time that you spend.

Both the accumulation and taking back of TOIL must be agreed in advance with your manager.

Further information on circumstances where and how TOIL is applied can be found in the Pay & Expenses Policy.
