Spencer’s volunteering day

On Thursday 11th August (which was a very hot day!), Spencer Mitchell used one of his MVDC’s volunteering days to help run an activity day with the leisure team at Reigate & Banstead Borough Council.

Spencer volunteers as the Warden at the Jordan Heights Scout Camp Site, based in Reigate and the activity day for school children took place there with a small team of helpers, including two colleagues from RBBC.

The day was well attended by a number of children from across Surrey, including one from Leighton Buzzard (Bedfordshire) who was staying with his grandma. In the morning, twenty children, ranging in age from six to eight, undertook a number of activities including archery (taught by Spencer as he is a qualified archery instructor), mini cross bows and tackling an assault course and climbing wall.

The afternoon session was geared up for older children between the ages of nine and twelve and 16 of them took part in tomahawk throwing (Spencer is a qualified instructor for that as well!), scaling the climbing wall, scrabbling through the assault course, together with some more mini cross bow action. Both groups also embarked on an adventure walk around the camp site, which included conquering the “dizzy” heights of Reigate Hill!

Spencer said that the volunteers received some amazing feedback from the kids and their parents; one has already signed up for scouting and several others are interested in getting involved because they enjoyed the day so much.
