Visual inspection of Electrical Appliances, Week 18th to 22nd July

All electrical appliances that have a mains supply and a plug  (not USB powered items)  have to be  visually inspected by all staff for signs of damage, burning, and general condition in the week the 18th to 22nd of July. Staff will be responsible for checking their computer leads, monitor leads, phone chargers, camera chargers, fans, extension leads   and all other equipment held by their team including items  hidden away in desks and MVDC equipment used at home.  General office equipment  such as office photocopiers, plan scanners, CCTV cabinets, will be inspected by delegated staff.

BMT Managers have received a Teams briefing and guidance on the requirement for formal  visual inspections  of electrical appliances once a year by the user under the Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection & Testing of Electrical Equipment (5th Edition) and also the “common sense duty off care” to yourself and colleagues of visually considering the condition of electrical appliances prior to their use each time they are used. The code of practice supports the duty of care enshrined in the  Health & Safety at Work Act where staff already have a duty of care to each other and their employer,  just as the employer has duty of care for their staff.

Formal visual inspection week will be 18th to 22nd July and your BMT manager has the spreadsheet for logging each appliance and the guidance notes, please log by user or location.  BMT Managers may have already briefed line managers,  the whole team or a chosen member of your team or a they will be briefing you at team meetings or by email in the coming days. This will be an annual event in July each year.
