The Dangers of Autocomplete

This is a general reminder about the dangers of autocomplete.  We have recently had a personal data breach where an email was sent to the wrong recipient.  The ICO decided not to take any formal action because the breach was contained, however they did recommend that staff should consider removing all unnecessary autocompleted email addresses from their mailboxes.

We have previously reminded all staff about how easy it is to send an email to the wrong recipient.

The external recipients tick box is in place as a safeguard but it is also worth remembering that if you delete external email addresses that are out of date or come up as first choice on autocomplete you can reduce the risk of a data breach.

It is very easy to do – you just start to type and if an autocompleted address comes up that you no longer use click on the “X” at the end of the address (see example below).  After that it will no longer come up as an option and therefore can’t be chosen by mistake.
