Light The Darkness On Holocaust Memorial Day

Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) takes place this Wednesday, 27 January and you can take part by joining households across the UK to light a candle and safely place it in your window at 8pm.

This will be to

  • remember those who were murdered for who they were
  • stand against prejudice and hatred today

Promoted and supported by Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, HMD is the international day to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi Persecution and in genocides that followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

Each year thousands of activities take place for HMD, bringing together people from all backgrounds to learn lessons from the past in creative, reflective and inspiring ways. Activities offer an opportunity to honour the experiences of those affected by the Holocaust and genocide, and challenge everyone to work for a safer, better future.

The theme for 2021 is ‘Be the light in the darkness’. It encourages everyone to reflect on the depths humanity can sink to, but also the ways individuals and communities resisted that darkness to ‘be the light’ before, during and after genocide.

Register to watch the annual Holocaust Memorial Day UK commemorative ceremony online on Wednesday 27 January from 7-8pm.
