Copyright and Copying

The Council holds a public administration licence from the Copyright Licensing Authority and also a basic Newspaper Licensing Authority business licence.

What this means in practice is that staff may now copy from a variety of books, magazines and some newspapers- these being the national papers plus the Dorking and Leatherhead Advertiser, Surrey Advertiser and Epsom Guardian.

It does NOT cover all local/regional papers so if in doubt, please speak to the Communications team.

For more information about these licences please refer to the relevant organisation’s website (www.cla.co.uk and www.nla.co.uk).

Please note that the terms of our licences do NOT permit copying a newspaper article and emailing it to other people.

Please note that it is each person’s responsibility to comply with the terms of our licences, as a failure to do so could result in financial penalties for the Council and damage to the reputation of the Council.

If you are in any doubt at all, please contact the Communications or Emma Day first.

Please note that for newspaper articles, the Communications team provides a press cuttings service for articles appearing in our local papers and some other media. Please contact the Communications Team for more information.

The copyright legislation for newspapers does not apply for articles in newspapers that are more than 25 years old.
