29. What about flexi and time-recording systems during this period?

It is not always possible to maintain a rigid timetable or to record accurately when you are working or not working – even at the best of times in today’s world.  With technology you have much more freedom as to where or when you work and you are far more likely to pick up emails or respond remotely out of the office, making it difficult to monitor your working hours so comprehensively.  At times like these it becomes even more difficult.

In some cases if you are working remotely you may be working harder and longer than when in the office.  Lots of people report doing this especially if their laptop, work papers or phone are with them at all times and it becomes harder to switch off or separate home and work lives.

For these reasons and the fact that all services are different you will need to make your own arrangements with your manager regarding requirements to record your working time.  It is not possible for one size to fits all as it entirely depends on the job that you do, your home environment and your natural working style.  In some cases it will not be sensible to continue to use the flexi-time system as this requires a certain amount of rigidity that may not be helpful or possible.  However some managers may request that you record your working time in a different way – e.g. recording an average over a week’s period.
